Outwit. Outplay. Outlast. That’s the aim of the game for those competing in Season 5 of Australian Survivor titled, “Champions vs. Contenders”. Recently, filmed in Savusavu, this season sees the competitors battling it out for AUD$500,000 (approximately FJD$767,000) if they survive 50 days of competition.

Shot on the rural outskirts of Savusavu from April to June 2018, this is the first time for the Australian Survivor franchise to shoot in Fiji. After making the move from Samoa to Fiji’s hidden paradise, host for three seasons Jonathan LaPaglia told TV WEEK magazine “I was excited – it’s good to shake it up and have a new location. I loved Samoa – I had fun. But we did two seasons there, so I think we got the most out of it. It was time for a change.”

Film Fiji CEO Mr. Dallas Foon said, “It was good to see a major production choosing Savusavu. Being a major Australian TV show, hosting them is a positive indication that international productions are recognizing Fiji’s capability to meet their needs.” He added, “The area greatly benefited from the filming through employment and economic activity with the arrival of the 160 strong foreign crew contingent. With the inclusion of over 400 local crew employed during production, locals were able to gain valuable experience in the audio-visual industry. But more importantly, this has expanded our pool of skilled individuals.”

Australian Survivor is one of the largest of the international reality game show franchise “Survivor”. Broadcast on Network Ten, the season debut aired on 1 August performing better than last year’s debut episode by gaining an additional 77,000 viewers. This brought Fiji as a location to over 900,000 viewers in Australia alone.

Season 5 of Australian Survivor sees the 24 competitors divided into two tribes based on their “celebrity” status. The Champions tribe comprising of those who are, or have been, considered celebrities in their field; these include Olympian Shane Gould, ruby legend Mat Rogers and Miss Australia 2015 and Miss Universe, Monika Radulovic, while the Contenders are normal, everyday Australians.
